By |January 16th, 2011|

Koi fish, more commonly known to the western world as carp, might (to a westerner) seem an unlikely subject for a tattoo, but the rich symbolism behind these fish must explain why koi fish tattoos are such popular choices, particularly with men.

Different Fish Tattoo Symbolisms and Meanings

Fish tattoo symbolism is probably the most ancient known symbolism to man and is as diverse as the different species and cultural contexts that exist. Shrines to ancient fish deities have been found tracing back to 6000 BC in Europe,

Creative Tribal Shark Tattoos

Although it was 35 years ago that the first ‘Jaws’ film soared to popularity, everyone remembers the menacing theme music that heralded the appearance of the shark; and I would like to place a personal wager that when people see your tribal shark tattoo, many of them will hum that tune to you!  Whether you love sharks or hate them, these amazing lords of the sea make very striking tattoo subjects.

They are usually seen as an expression of bravery and fearlessness, and an emblem of protection for the wearer.  Sailors (notoriously superstitious people) often wore shark tattoos to signify that they were not afraid of the dangers at sea and also to give them protection on board ship.  Other traits of sharks include perception, calculation, intuitiveness, curiosity, efficiency and dynamism and can all be symbolised in a shark tattoo.

But facts are facts and if you are considering a seahorse tattoo, it might be worth looking into the fascination these tiny fish hold for so many of us.  In the first place, seahorses are miniscule, inoffensive creatures which make highly decorative tattoo designs.  If represented faithfully on any part of the body, they can offend no-one.  Small or large, they are undeniably pretty and conjure up images of magical worlds beneath the oceans, where mermaids and mermen sit on thrones made of coral and pearl.
